The Purpose of the Improvement

The proposed improvement project is the implementation of the barcode medication administration in the facility. The main purpose of implementing barcode medication technology in the clinical facility is to reduce medication errors, improve patient safety, and reduce costs incurred by the health facility. Using barcodes in medication administration enables electronic prescriptions of medication, administration, and recording. The technology will replace the handwritten inpatient medication record, which is usually misread due to inappropriate abbreviations and illegible handwriting. The technology will therefore increase efficiency in medication administration. The facility has suffered medication errors, which influence patient outcomes in the facility, threaten patient safety as patients have a higher likelihood of suffering adverse events, and increase costs of care for the hospital. According to Naidu and Alicia (2019), study findings show that implementing a barcode medication can reduce dispensing errors by 96% and documentation errors by 80.3% while increasing compliance.

The Target Population

The target audience is healthcare providers, including physicians, pharmacists, and nurses. The barcode technology is expected to ensure that when a physician prescribes a drug, the order is faxed and entered in the computer system. Barcode is a great technology that facilitates information verification about the medication before its administration to the patient. The technology will increase nurses’ effectiveness and accuracy in medication administration by ensuring that they adhere to the five rights of the right patient, the right drug, dosage, route, and time (Naidu & Alicia, 2019). The technology alerts the nurses in case any of the rights are violated. The information encrypted on the barcode for each medication will allow the nurse to scan and verify every patient detail before administering any medication. Nurses are highly likely to misread orders, delay, and administer the wrong medication and dosage due to illegible handwriting and the wrong use of abbreviations in medication orders issued by physicians (Naidu & Alicia, 2019).

Benefits of the Quality Improvement

The healthcare facility will enjoy various benefits after implementing barcode medication administration technology. Such benefits include a reduction in medication errors, decreased adverse events, increased patient satisfaction due to increased patient safety, and cost-effectiveness, as the hospital will use fewer finances to treat medication errors. The technology will facilitate verification by nurses before the administration of any medication. Errors in medication administration have been associated with fatigue, higher workload, poor concentration, overlooked information, negligence, and lack of proper knowledge (Thompson et al., 2018). With the barcode technology, nurses will receive an alert if there is any error in the patient, drug, dosage, administration route, and time. The likelihood of an error occurring in medication administration will be reduced significantly. Patient safety will increase significantly due to the reduction in the rate and severity of medication administration errors (Barakat & Franklin, 2020). Costs incurred while treating medication errors will also be significantly reduced since only a few errors or no errors are likely to be reported.

Interprofessional Collaboration Required

Successful implementation of the barcode technology requires the cooperation of different professionals in the healthcare facility, including nurses, physicians, pharmacists, and managers. Staff resistance is a significant barrier to implementing barcode technology due to a lack of proper communication and involvement of all the professionals (Naidu & Alicia, 2019). Interprofessional collaboration ensures that all professionals are part of implementing team. The physicians are responsible for prescribing medications to patients, and the prescription orders are sent to the pharmacists electronically. The pharmacists enter the prescriptions in the computer system, assigning each medication a specific code. The nurses are responsible for scanning the code before administering the medication to the patient to determine If there are errors relating to dosage, the medication type, the patient, the time of administering medication, or the wrong route; the nurse receives an alert. The management team is responsible for gathering and providing the necessary resources required to implement the project.

Cost or Budget Justification

The cost of implementing the barcode technology is usually high and is usually a major hurdle for many health facilities. For example, a survey indicated that a hospital with 100 beds would spend an average of $3 million in implementing the technology over the first five years (Leapfrog Hospital, 2022). The financial benefits would be cost-effective if implemented successfully and integrated into practice by healthcare providers. The barcode system reduces healthcare costs by reducing rates of medication errors. The system is likely to be cost-effective for the facility due to the high rates of medication errors that occur in the facility and the adverse events that lead to the facility incurring high costs in providing care. The facility should expect to save an average of $2000 per harmful medication error prevented. The improvement project will be cost-effective in the long run.

Evaluation of the Quality Improvement Project

Evaluating the improvement project would be crucial to determine its effectiveness in addressing the current issues and identifying the areas of weakness that may require a different approach. Evaluation measures will include a reduction rate of medication errors, a reduction in adverse events, hospitalization rates associated with medication errors, cost-saving, and patient ratings. The evaluation measures evaluate the technology’s effectiveness in reducing or eliminating medication errors. The evaluation will require data gathering and analysis to determine changes over time. Patient ratings will measure patient satisfaction with the level of patient safety in the facility.
