As a postgraduate student, maintaining an extensive knowledge base and staying abreast of the latest evidence-based practices is essential. These journals serve as valuable resources by providing the most recent publications on research related to nursing and healthcare. Given the expectation to engage in research and clinical inquiry, reading these journals will enhance my skills in conducting research and presenting findings effectively (Bond, n.d.).

Given the flexibility of postgraduate master’s in nursing programs, students must select the most suitable timeframe to align with their academic needs and personal commitments. For instance, working registered nurses (RNs) may find it challenging to pursue the MSN degree on a full-time basis due to work commitments. In such cases, opting for a part-time program is a strategic choice. While a full-time MSN course typically takes 18 months to two years for completion, a part-time program extends over approximately three years, providing a more manageable pace for individuals with additional professional responsibilities (Cynthia et al., 2016).

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

There exists a significant and intricate relationship between writing and academic integrity. According to Tauginienė (2016), integrity is a foundational value in academia, representing a fundamental ethical principle. In the context of academic writing, integrity entails freely expressing one’s ideas while duly crediting others when incorporating their intellectual material, thoughts, or ideas. MSN students, embarking on postgraduate studies, engage in extensive writing on diverse subjects such as physiology, social justice in healthcare, and holistic nursing. Navigating this landscape while upholding academic integrity requires the inclusion of proper citations to acknowledge the original authors of the ideas presented in their papers. Failure to do so constitutes plagiarism, a breach of ethical standards and academic honesty (Marsh, 2018).

The relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics is inherently intertwined. As nursing students pursue their MSN degree, the expectation is that the principles of academic integrity exercised in their postgraduate training will seamlessly transfer to their professional practice. Any lapses in academic honesty, such as plagiarism, during the program may foreshadow unethical behavior in their future practice. This connection is particularly critical in nursing, as professionals in this field deal directly with human lives. Maintaining ethical standards is paramount, as the nurse-patient relationship is inherently fiduciary, relying on trust and transparency. Upholding ethical nursing practice is integral to ensuring patient well-being (Grace, 2018).

Part 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

To uphold academic integrity, MSN nursing students can leverage various tools and strategies. These measures are crucial in preventing any form of academic dishonesty in student papers. Plagiarism, with its serious professional and academic consequences, can be avoided by incorporating proper citations, effective paraphrasing, judicious use of quotations, utilizing plagiarism checkers, and prioritizing original ideas (Calonia, 2019). One valuable tool for maintaining academic integrity is Grammarly, which not only checks for grammatical errors but also features an in-built plagiarism checker. This tool aids MSN nursing students in identifying and rectifying any potential plagiarism issues before submitting their papers (Calonia, 2019). Additionally, mastering the skill of paraphrasing is essential. Properly rephrasing others’ ideas while preserving the original meaning and crediting the source is a key aspect of academic integrity (Calonia, 2019). Building upon the insights from Part 1, it is evident that the advanced practice nurse must formulate strategies to uphold both academic and professional integrity and ethics. This commitment is crucial during the educational journey as an MSN student and continues to be paramount when serving as a qualified practitioner entrusted with patient care. Remarkably, nurses have consistently been recognized for their high levels of professional integrity and honesty, as highlighted in a recent Gallup survey (Aureus Medical Group, 2020).

For an MSN nurse student, the implications of practicing academic dishonesty extend beyond the classroom. Engaging in shortcuts during education may predispose them to unethical practices in their professional career. The potential consequences of dishonest nursing professionals, particularly in areas such as handling controlled medications, are alarming. An MSN nurse who previously resorted to academic dishonesty might compromise patient care by providing false information about an addicted patient and mishandling medications. As a student nurse, key strategies for maintaining integrity and ethics involve consistently producing original work and meticulously checking academic papers for potential plagiarism before submission. Upon transitioning to a qualified professional role, sustaining honesty is paramount. This includes the commitment to never deceive patients by failing to fulfill promises made. Embracing teamwork with colleagues is another effective strategy, fostering an environment where mistakes can be pointed out and corrected collaboratively (Aureus Medical Group, 2020).
