Students are required to maintain weekly reflective narratives throughout the course to combine into one course-long reflective journal that integrates leadership and inquiry into current practice as it applies to the Professional Capstone and Practicum course.

In your journal, you will reflect on the personal knowledge and skills gained throughout this course. The journal should address a variable combination of the following, depending on your specific practice immersion clinical experiences:

  • New Practice Approaches
  • Interprofessional Collaboration
  • Health Care Delivery and Clinical Systems
  • Ethical Considerations in Health Care
  • Practices of Culturally Sensitive Care and Ensuring the Integrity of Human Dignity in the Care of all Patients
  • Population Health Concerns and Health Disparities
  • The Role of Technology in Improving Health Care Outcomes
  • Health Policy
  • Leadership and Economic Models

Students will outline what they have discovered about their professional practice, personal strengths and weaknesses that surfaced, additional resources and abilities that could be introduced to a given situation to influence optimal outcomes, and finally, how the student met the competencies aligned to this course.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Reflection Journal: Integrates leadership and inquiry sample

Throughout this course, I have learned about various new practice approaches, including evidence-based practice, patient-centered care, and quality improvement. For example, in evidence-based practice, I learned to use the best available evidence to guide clinical decision-making. I gained a deeper understanding of implementing new techniques and approaches to improve patient outcomes and healthcare delivery. Therefore it has helped me provide better patient care and improve health outcomes (Vaismoradi et al., 2020).

I have learned the importance of effective communication and collaboration among healthcare team members. I have learned how to work with individuals from different disciplines and recognize the unique strengths and contributions each team member brings to the table (Vaismoradi et al., 2020). For example, during my clinical rotation in a hospital setting, I worked alongside nurses, physicians, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to provide patient care, which has been so beneficial to me throughout. By collaborating with these individuals, I gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of teamwork and effective communication.

I have learned about the various healthcare delivery and clinical systems in place, including electronic health records, healthcare policies, and healthcare financing. I have understood how to use EHRs, how it works, and how they impact patient care and healthcare delivery. It has helped me navigate the healthcare system more effectively and provide better patient care (Ahlstedt et al., 2019). I have learned about various ethical considerations in healthcare and how to approach ethical dilemmas that preserve patient autonomy and respect their wishes. For example, I have learned about informed consent and how to obtain it from patients before providing treatment. I have also learned about the importance of confidentiality and maintaining patient privacy. It can help me navigate ethical dilemmas and make decisions that respect patient autonomy and wishes.

I have learned about the importance of cultural competence and how to provide care through respectful and sensitive careers and cultural backgrounds. For example, I have learned the importance of recognizing and respecting patients’ unique cultural beliefs, values, and practices from different cultural backgrounds (Vaismoradi et al., 2020). I can now provide more effective care to patients from diverse cultural backgrounds and ensure that all patients receive respectful and dignified care. I have gained an appreciation for population health concerns and the importance of addressing social determinants of health. For example, I have learned about the impact of social and environmental factors, such as poverty, on health outcomes. This knowledge has helped me develop interventions and care plans tailored to patient’s unique needs and help address health disparities.

I have learned about the various technologies used in healthcare, including electronic health records and telehealth (Ahlstedt et al., 2019). I have understood how they are used, how they work, and how they can improve patient outcomes. Through my coursework, I have understood healthcare policy and its impact on healthcare delivery and patient outcomes. Delivery is the Affordable Care Act (ACA). It helped me identify potential areas for improvement in healthcare delivery. For example, suppose a policy is causing barriers to care or leading to disparities in health outcomes. In that case, I can work with other healthcare professionals and policymakers to advocate for changes that will benefit patients. I have gained an understanding of leadership and economic models in healthcare. For example, value-based care incentivize healthcare providers to focus on preventive care and patient education to improve health outcomes rather than just treating illnesses as they arise. It has helped me advocate for policies that improve patient care and promote better health outcomes.

My professional practice has allowed me to discover my strengths and weaknesses. I have recognized that I have a strong sense of empathy and can connect with patients personally. I can also work effectively with healthcare team members and collaborate and communicate with them to provide the best care for patients (Ahlstedt et al., 2019). However, I have also identified areas where I can improve. I need to work on my critical thinking skills and decision-making abilities. Additionally, I need to understand other health policies and the various economic models in healthcare. I have also identified additional resources and abilities that could be introduced to a given situation to influence optimal outcomes, including implementing evidence-based practice and improving communication among healthcare team members.
