Organizational Culture

            Organizational culture significantly impacts nurse leaders in initiating their leadership styles and principles. Barriers caused by organizational culture that may make nurse leaders feel powerless include poor organizational climate, restrictive organizational structure, and inadequate job conditions. Poor organizational climate inhibits the ability of nurse leaders to support staff members (Nouri et al., 2021). Nurse leaders find it challenging to initiate a positive working environment in the unit. This creates mistrust and lack of psychological security in the unit, hindering the ability of the nurse leaders to influence team members.

            Restrictive organizational structure may include non-participation in decision-making and increased responsibility of nurse leaders with minimal authority. Nurse leaders are restrained from making decisions on issues such as healthcare financing, staffing, and performance. On the other hand, they are headed many responsibilities, such as coordinating care, supervising team members, and compiling reports on the quality of care (Nouri et al., 2021). Nurseleaders are therefore left with no authority to influence the change and performance of the team members.

            Inadequate job conditions may make nurse leaders feel powerless as they execute their daily duties. These may include high workload, the nursing shortage, and inadequate facilities and equipment. This happens when an organization focuses on increasing profit while investing little in the nursing workforce and materials (Hughes, 2018). In such situations, nurse leaders find it challenging to create positive working conditions for the providers since the unit focus on quantity rather than value. For instance, nurse leaders may find it difficult to initiate value-based care, which aims at enhancing the quality of care by improving patient health outcomes while minimizing work-related stress and burnout (Hughes, 2018). Nurse leaders appear as if they are not supporting the providers’ professionalism; instead, they are disconnecting the clinicians from their purpose as healers.
